Any personal experience with Stentor student strings?

Post by Uncle Buck »

Thinking of buying my daughter, who is just starting first year orchestra, a 1/2 size cello. Leaning towards a Stentor cello.

I've done a bit of research, they're made in China, inspected in UK, fingerboard and pegs are ebony. The most common problem with some cheap student string instruments is the pegs not being able to hold their position and stay in tune. Especially with the ones that use something other than ebony.

So with that, I'd appreciate any input if any of you have personal experience with Stentor models. And yeah, I know, I'll get lots of general rants on all sides of the "made-in-China" instruments issue. Can't stop that. But I'm really interested in whether any of you have first-hand experience with this particular brand.

Thanks!

Have you tried the string bass side of the forum at Talkbass.com to get more input?

I make all my string instrument and accessories purchases from SHAR in Michigan. They have a broad range of prices from beginner to virtuoso level. If you upgrade, you are given 100% credit for your trade-in.
