Windows Phone, RIP

Post by bort »

Are there any other Windows Phone users out there?

I was a loyal user, from the very beginning in 2007. I just found out that Microsoft has discontinued the product, and it is effectively dead. It was a good 10 year run for me!

So... The next time I get a phone, it will have to be an Android or iPhone, and I don't like either of those. The Windows Phone was severely lacking in apps, but I never really cared about that. It was very clean and intuitive to use, and I always have found it simpler and than Android or iPhone. Frankly, I don't like either of the options, but I guess I'm forced to choose one.

Anyway, that's my first world problem for today.

Bill Gates reportedly has gone to Android, if that tells you anything :?:

I actually went to my first Android phone ever just a few weeks ago after having iPhones since the beginning. I just got tired of the iPhone and lot of the associated costs. I went with a much less expensive Android device on a much less expensive plan and I'm happy. I have no land line phone, so this is my primary number/phone. I will say that I feel the basic functionality, look and feel are virtually the same between current Android and iPhone devices though I've come to prefer the Android experience more. With Android I feel that I have a much greater ability to configure the device the way I want it vs. the way Apple says it should be. Seems I have greater control and the experience is much more transparent and allows for much more end user control.

About 5 years ago, I won a radio contest, where the prize was an iPhone. I received it in the form of a $650 Apple gift card.

I still have that gift card, never wanted to buy anything they are selling!

I agree with bloke - I don't want to be bossed around by something (or someone) that is accepting money from me.

I've got a Note 3 and I love it. It's got a big screen (good for failing eyes), and the stylus is very useful too.

Furthermore, if I want more memory, I can get a larger SD card (can't do that with an iPhone). If the battery is getting old and won't take a charge, since it's removeable, I can easily replace it (can't do that with an iPhone). I've got an external battery charger, too, so I can have extra batteries on hand, just in case I can't be near a charger for an extended period of time (can't do that with an iPhone, either).

I'm sure there are other advantages that I'm missing right now, but those are the big ones for me.

I've oftentimes been left scratching my head wondering exactly what the attraction to Apple products is......

I wish those features were as common now as they were when the your phone was made. I have a Note 4 I'm going to cling to as long as I can because it was son of the last phones that offers those perks
   I feel your pain...

Actually, I've repaired the screen on this phone at least 2 times, specifically for the reason you mention (I want to keep this phone going as long as I can).

In fact, I've finally bitten the bullet and ordered an Otterbox and some ballistic glass screen protectors for it..... :tuba:

Being an Apple user, I'll be happy to take this card off your hands if it is still valid. My wife and I have a lot of Apple products and are very happy with them. Yes, they have their quirks, but so does everything else. My next purchase will be a new Mac. Mine is 10 years old and can't handle the new operating system. I have to upgrade to do some of the things I need to do. I've had Microsoft operating system computers in the past, they seem to die on a 3 year cycle. Apple products have been lasting much longer for me.

Phones and computers are very different. All phones seem to last only a year or two. :P

For computers, the saying I have always heard, and found true, is that you can spend $1,000 on a Windows machine that lasts 3 years, or $2,000 on a Mac that lasts 6 years.

I have used a Mac at work for a long time, and have found few, if any, significant differences between the two. At least I know how to fix a PC!

Yeah, I like the voice activated text messaging in my car, too. Even if it misunderstands half of the words, it at least gives my wife a laugh (wait WHAT was that supposed to say?)

Personally, I would not put $600 into a car stereo for a 12 year old car... But that's just me!

I love my Windows phone. Still use it, got one on runout and then a free upgrade to the top of the line one. The reason I like it so much is for the calendar. The lock screen has my upcoming calendar schedule. I tried an iPhone but missed meetings etc because I was too lazy to manually swipe down to see the calendar. To have the calendar on the do the samething on an iPhone you have to jail break it. There was an app that supposedly could do this but it didn't work that well for me.

Sure it has limited apps but I have an iPad. I was told android App Store has too much malware

I will probably keep using it for as long as I can get replacement battery's for it. I am a die hard fan!

Ditto. I go all the way back to my PDA running windows CE. I loved Windows mobile 6.5, but when they went to Windows Phone 7 I was done with them and switched to Android. Now I have all of the customization that Windows mobile 6.5 had, but with much more power. Now, If I can only find a launcher that makes my phone look like a Zune again....lol.

Well, it happened. My Lumia 950 died and I had to buy a new phone. I now have an Android, a Samsung something or another.

So far so good. I don't hate it as much as I thought I would, but I also don't understand why people like them as much as they do. Anyway, see ya later, windows phone. :(

I'm glad they tried to do phones.
My 10 year old PC laptop kept getting slower and s-l-o-w-e-r,
then they combined OSs, it got new life, and it still seems to work just fine as a netbook!

I hear you. I'm actually very tech savvy, and want the latest and greatest stuff, but think it's ridiculous to spend nearly $1,000 for something as temporary as a phone. I think this one cost me about $250, which is bad enough!

Funniest thing is that with Windows phone there were almost no apps, and many things didn't work. You'd go to stores and they would have app only coupons, and with a windows phone you would be out of luck. Even when there was a windows app, it usually had about half of the functionality of the Android and Apple versions.

Now, overnight I have access to what the rest of the world has had for 10 years. Not sure I want it all at once, but I have to say this is a little embarrassing.

If Microsoft could get their interface to work up to 2018 expectations, it would be amazing. But, no dice.
