Tuba and Clarinet duets?

Post by DrewMa »

Has anyone come across some good tuba / clarinet duets? There are a couple clarinet players that I know and we are looking for some music to play. I’m thinking of writing / transcribing a few things, but curious if any of you have explored with this instrumentation.

Thanks,
Drew

Hi Drew,

I did a search for tuba/clarinet duets on Hickey's online catalog and found a few matches:

http://www.hickeys.com/search.php?q=tuba+clarinet+duets" target="_blank

I can't speak to any of these pieces, but perhaps you could explore one or more of them.

Best of luck!

Dowloadable for free. You may PM me your email address, if you want an invitation to my project/

3 duets by Beethoven and a sonata by Mozart. There may be relevant versions in other keys, if you browse the folders. Any way there are several other constellations involving conical low brasses.

I'm a fan of the Little Suite For Winter, by Peter Schickele.

It was a ton of fun to play, and the audience seemed to like it to.! The music has enough pretty moments to balance the humor.

A piece that I have performed a number of times that works quite well is:

Quattro Bicinie by Rodger Vaughan (Translates as "four short compositions")

It is availabe from http://philharmusica.com/

as:

30059 Vaughan, Rodger QUATTRO BICINIE Tba/cl 15.50

Good luck,

As I got it Bicini is the term for a two-part composition, much like bikini is the term for a two-part bathing suit.

There are immense numbers of bicinis to be found via the right research in renaissance music libraries. They come in various voice constellations: SA, ST, AT, AB, & TB. I will not exclude the existence of the Soprano & Bass constellation, only I don’t remember seeing it. All bicini constellations may be transposed to fit instruments with the right interval between their ranges. Being able to read clefs makes things easier, when it comes to reading from Urtext editions.

you might find that there is more out there for bassoon and clarinet that would meet your needs. I have done this in the past and it can be great fun and beneficial for both players. The tubist develops some sensitivity in playing with a relatively weaker instrument and the clarinetist learns how to beef up (these was her words, not mine) their sound to good effect
