Conn tuba

Sorry to respond when I'm not really in the market for your tuba (wish I were), but I thought I'd throw out a question.

I played (and loved) a Conn 3J CC for years. Was the model that leisuresuitmike is selling here a Conn prototype, on which Conn subsequently based the 2J and 3J mass-produced lines?

i used to own this tuba..

i had some work down by Lee Stofer when i had it...
Lee and i were wondering what model it was so we looked up the serial number to date it...

it was made in 1948 or 1958.. i cant remember which...

this puts the horn Pre- 2j, 3j...

Lee said that this is Possibly a horn that was made for Harvey that never made it back to the factory for production...

it is the same size as a 2j, 16.5 inch bell...

but Lee said the craftmanship was Much better than a 2j!

so that is the story...

i have had a few emails about this tuba...

i want to clarify that this tuba is NOT a 2j, 3j, 4j...etc...

it does not have a model number only a serial number...

it is Comparable in size to a 2j...but craftsmanship is much better than a production horn...

The Modelless Conn

This sounds a lot like the horn I sold to high school student in Lakeland Florida about 10 years ago. If so, the scoop on the horn from my old brass man, Larry Minnick out in California, is that it's got the Conn name on it but it was built by the Olds company in Fullerton using Conn parts in the late 50's. I picked the horn up from Musicians' Supply Shop in the late 70's and did several recordings and a tour of Japan with the axe. In the late 80's I had the horn rebuilt and plated silver by Anderson Plating in Indiana. The original horn was laquer and beat up pretty bad. You might want to mention that the horn has round crooks on the valve assembly as opposed to the squared off crooks that appeared on the production models. At one time I had this horn and a 3J, this horn was far superior to the 3J. This is a kick butt horn and I wish that I had the bucks to buy it back.

we talked about this horn when i had it and was trying to sell it...
