An interesting Java applet--it charts the popularity of various names over the last 120 years or so...

I was in high school band with a girl who's last name was Smoot.
In high school, I knew a girl named Georgia Pietsch. :)

Some parents have a very strange sense of humor.

To change the subject, how about the names youd find on the attendance sheets that substitute teachers passed around, you know, like

Shanda Lear
I. P. Freely
Ivana Tinkle
Amanda Hugenkiss

No Kidding- I had a hot band camp fling with a girl in high school named Cheri Prough. Yep, pronounced "Cherry Pro". Nice girl! That was a fun year at camp. Ah, to be young and stupid again!

True story -- a Biology teacher at my High School was named Otto Morris Biels. Yep, Otto Mo Biels.

** Oh, should also mention an old girlfriend of mine back in my college days. Her name was Susan Virginia Arnold; but on her student ID they ran out of letters, so it wound up "Arnold, Susan Virgin". Okay, it ain't Otto Mo Biels, but it was pretty funny anyway!

There was a girl in some of my classes a few years ago named Amy Fisher. The reactions she got from Professors reading the roster on the first day of class were truly priceless.

Oddly enough (some of you probably know this already), that's a real one! Bill Lear (founder of Lear Siegler and designer of the LearJet) and his wife named their daughter Crystal Shanda Lear ...

First day of school, the teacher asked each student to stand,in turn and state thier name.In the second row,a kid stood up and said."I'm Crummy Jones."The teacher told Crummy to remain standing. She said,"I'm not sure about you."Another row over,a kid that looked like Crummy stood and said,"My name is Crappy Jones.I'm Crummy's brother."
The teacher told them both to leave and not come back to class until they were prepared to give thier real names. On the way out, they grabbed a third kid that looked just like them and said,"Come on,Poopy, she's not gonna believe you either."

Isn't there some law or rule to protect children from "humoristic" parents? I know around here the civil servant registrating the name has the right (obligation) to refuse a name if it's very likely to cause confusion or problems for the child.

My dad claims to have gone to high school (R. J. Reynolds high school, by the way) with a Tommy Gunn, and the sisters Candy and Sugar Cain.

He was raised in North Carolina, so I believe him.

The worst I ever saw was a family who had named their son Yoni.

If you don't get it, use google. Do NOT do it at work/school though...
