Trumpet Mouthpiece For Tuba Player

For all you who also play trumpet - I'm looking for mouthpiece suggestions. A couple of decades ago I was playing trumpet almost every day, as a teacher, with pep band, in church. I used (and still have) a Schilke 13A4A, pretty small with a tiny bore. I don't need the crazy high range anymore, would like an easier to play mouthpiece with broad, comfortable rim, .medium to large cup, and a roomier bore. Sure, I could just get a Bach 7C, but there are many options. What have you tried that works well for you?

Bach 1C

I agree on the Bach 1C. All my years teaching, playing or demonstrating a trumpet, that tiny mouthpiece felt like trying to buzz into the end of a straw (illegal in California now, of course ). The 1C is about as big as a trumpet mouthpiece comes. 1 1/2 C was also a good alternative and easier to find.

Started trumpet in 1947 and still play. Use NYC Bach 1 (pre Mt. Vernon). Big. Not for the faint of heart. For really tough jobs in Army requiring lots of endurance (example, 2 hour parade-ground division review) I would use a less demanding mouthpiece such as a Bach 7C.

I use a Bach 3C that has been customized with a #76 backbore (slightly tighter), so when I play trumpet I get a little resistance so I don't overblow. For decades I played a stock mid-'70's Bach 3C with the stock #10 backbore.

It is not the embouchure. It is the breath support. As tuba players, we think of controlled big, easy air. As trumpet players, we must think of controlled velocity of air. It is not the cup size. It is finding the correct backbore to help the transition the breath support requirements.

I understand the "soda-straw" issue. So whatever cup size fits, play it. But pay more attention to the backbore.

Bach 1C

Bach 1C for me, too. It is a big a$$ orchestra mouthpiece that works well for tuba players. Without having touched a trumpet in years I can still pick one up with a 1C and pop out a high C with no trouble. Don't let the jazzers fool you into thinking that you will lose your high range. YOU have the chops, not the mouthpiece.

When I was doing trumpet doubling, I found that the Schilke 18 had a much more user-friendly rim for me, and I liked the tone color.
