repair mouthpiece rim damage??

Post by ppalan »

I don't recall seeing this particular question discussed so...
Is it possible to repair a damaged mouthpiece rim without (radically) altering the rim profile? The pictures show the type of mouthpiece (Rudy Meinl RM-0.) and the damage. The damage resulted from falling and hitting the rim of a cup sitting on the floor next to me. Really weird because the ceramic cup did not break or even show any damage.

Can you feel the divot when you play it? If you can't feel it, I'd leave it alone.

I know that Dan Oberloh has done this. However, unless it is a rare mouthpiece, you would probably find it cheaper to buy a new one.

Back in 2004, a couple of the experts entertained this question. The condensed version is "buy another one", but I guess that leaves you with one that you could practice on. The hobo version would involve bondo and fingernail polish, I suppose.

Thank you all for your input. I did try playing on it and if I turn it so the dent is at 3:00 or 9:00, I can't feel it so I'll just do that. It just ticks me off, cosmetically, for being so careless. Thanks again.

I don't know - didn't break the cup, doesn't that count for something? Polycarbonate plastic is the answer. Won't damage, and won't be damaged.
