Re: Update Update
Oh what the heck, celebrate twice! I went down to the pub and had a beer (or more) and a port (or so) to celebrate for you.
Having had to edit this to fix typos should be proof enough that I DID do that and my alchohol stream is getting back upe to proper tuba player's "proof" level.

Thanks, guys.
My 3 year old sang happy birthday to me this morning, and then my 1 year old clapped to it. Hard to beat that!

Did you also wait around to see the owner's reaction? That would have made the scenario complete...bloke wrote:I played a gig in Memphis last week at a downtown church where there were parking meters in front of the church. I had to unload my stuff, so I left my car there temporarily.
When I came back out to move my car, was a cop writing a parking ticket.
I walked up to him and said, "Come on, buddy, how about giving a guy a break?"
He ignored me and continued writing the ticket, so I called him a pencil-necked geek. He glared at me and started writing another ticket for a cracked windshield !...so I then asked him if his psychiatrist makes him lie face down on the couch because he's so ugly.
He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first, and started writing a third ticket !This went on until he had placed five tickets on the windshield.
I didn't care; my car was the one behind that one, and I had put a couple of quarters in the meter.

Just waiting for parking ticket amnesty day.
If I can't pay 1 parking ticket, I certainly can't pay 20 of them!

Friday, Saturday, Monday, and I'm finally DONE with gigs for 2018.
' no Tunica, Mississippi casino NYE gig this year...and I view that as a good thing, as at least TWO of those tax-the-poor glory-houses have been shuttered in the past couple of years (hopefully, more soon...though I'm pretty sure the same hand-to-mouth dummies are spending the same money on the Tennessee lottery - enriching bureaucratic crooks and building absurd/palatial student union buildings, so...). Also (though the actual town of Tunica is a few miles to the south), it's now (rather than the pre-casino abject poverty) a gang/murder town (you know: like Memphis).
I'm always struggling to get back on the weight loss wagon. I intensely dislike "exercise" (nonproductive), but very much like " physical work" (productive). Cleaning up underbrush, deadfall, and poison ivy/privet hedge eradication (and most of that crap - unless worthy firewood - is placed into washes to undo erosion, so win-win-win) is mostly upper body, YET seriously works the legs as well. When I push myself and put in three hours "out there", I collapse afterward...so I believe I'm really giving myself a good workout. When mid-November arrives, the ticks, spiders, and snakes are down, and it's much easier to work with "no leaves" and "temps in the 30's - 50's". Finally, it's really rewarding to take a totally-exhausted look at a previously-impassable part of the the woods, have it look like a park, and also see that all of the formerly-growing trash/underbrush is now undoing erosion (and it's really surprising how fast that method works!)
A ravine (begins jump-across shallow...ends up about twenty feet deep and fifty feet wide) runs around two sides of the property not far from the property line, with a few acres on a steep uphill on the other side of the ravine. I refer to the OTHER side of the ravine as the "deer farm", and just let that side "do whatever it will do"...though I do occasionally go over there, maintain the NO TRESPASSING signs, and cut poison ivy from trees and poison the roots.

Some genius decided to air the Mummers parade on TV down here in DC. No tubas. But I enjoy the marching double basses and HUGE saxophones!!

Re: Update Update
I haven’t seen a Mummers parade in years. I remembered larger bands with many banjos. Mostly marching, then stopping for a small skit at City Hall. The bands got smaller and the skits bigger. Am I wrong?? (I misremember a lot)

Re: Update Update
Actually, string bands themselves have gotten MUCH larger, and their routines more reminiscent of a Las Vegas production number. More saxes than banjos. Very technical arrangements. Still makes me cringe, but musically demanding.Three Valves wrote:I haven’t seen a Mummers parade in years. I remembered larger bands with many banjos. Depends.
They have several categories that the groups are in.
String Bands are only one category.
The parade goes on for hours (and hours and hours... )
