Re: Update Update
My update..
Another attempt at bringing playing back into the normal routine of my life. I tried 4 years ago for the first time since leaving college(6-8 years prior). Bought a tuba, joined a community ensemble, purchased appropriate etude books with grandioso dreams of disciplined, regular practice to get back to my college days(and better)...but quickly stopped when I felt uncomfortable practising in my apartment. (Plan was to use a mute, quickly realized that was not a good plan. I was also not comfortable playing without a mute in an apartment so the practicing stopped.).
Now I try again.
I have been practising at home for the past 8 weeks without a complaint from neighbors. My partner is supportive as well. So far so good.
I've started a 'dixieland' band at my work. (Biweekly rehearsals) - 2nd rehearsal today
I've joined a local brass ensemble near my home(Weekly rehearsals) -- first rehearsal with them last monday
I've reached out to the local college instructor, and have my first lesson Monday.(First structured lesson in over a decade) Frequency to be determined.
Hopefully there will not another update in 4 years of me saying this is my third attempt.
It is interesting which parts of playing tuba/music is 'like riding a bicycle' and which parts degrade with time.

Re: Update Update
I'm probably going to sell my tuba and go back to something with rotary valves. Kind of annoying, because it really is a great tuba... but after a few months, I'm realizing that the piston valve world just isn't for me.

Re: Update Update
I see it differently. I don't think it's that "what I've tried hasn't worked, I need to cast a wider net." I think I've got the right idea of where I want to be, it's just a matter of dialing it in, and finding/keeping what works well. If I felt like I was way off, I'd be willing to make more (and bigger changes). But as-is, I don't have a desire to start over, or to build up too many more options. Even with valves, country, size, key, and price... we're talking a LOT of options. Prior knowledge and experience have a lot of benefits.
Here, I tried varying the type of valves. Didn't really work out. Great tuba... but just don't love piston valves. I probably should have known that, but I thought I'd give it a try. I left the box for that choice, Joe.
At the simplest level though, there are two options: change as a player, or change the tuba you play. One is a lot easier than the other... and I don't like to work very hard.

I'm still trying to figure out which is the easy one, at least for me.
Thanks for playing!

Re: Update Update
Are there a lot of examples of BBb tubas that sell well in the US, at around $17K? I will allow, though, that the Cerveny 793 seems to have the edge on appearance, just looking at photos. Unfortunately I can't easily determine the height dimension of the Miraphone, without which we can't determine if they'd turn out to be essentially the same tuba.

Re: Update Update
Had my first lesson in over a decade. It was great, tho has really affected my thinking when playing since. Allot of discussion around breath -- reminded me of listening to Arnold Jacobs, but I never had a teacher who focused on this aspect of playing. During the lesson it was great. Tho, honestly now it's quite nice when you're playing legato but i'm struggling with how to have that same smooth 'flow' of air when playing 1&3 1&3..over and over. I want that free flowing feel when playing legato lines then as well...anyway. Lessons rock, will continue.
Also 2nd dixieland group rehearsal. Starting a small group has proven challenging. Fortunately there is 3 of us willing to meet weekly, and will continue to do so until the other folks have a consistent attendance/others join. Even with just a trumpet, soprano sax(Bb clarinet part), and tuba it's still great fun. Several folks late in the office swung by to give compliments throughout rehearsal.

Would you mind if I inquired who the teacher was? My dystonia recovery was pretty much based all around how I breathe.dopey wrote:Had my first lesson in over a decade. And since I'm here, I'll post an update. For the first time since I got dystonia, I am not playing gigs again. It has been about a 6 year journey and I still have a bit to go, but it is nice to be back on track. I will be performing my final DMA recital in May!

The preceding 10 years or so have seen remarkable advances in colonoscopy.

The prep is easier to drink (I did a two parter with no enema
)
100% anesthesia.

Of course, the second type is evil, and anyone who intentionally engages in evil is obviously mentally ill as well.
