You know, a couple years ago I played a 4-valve rotary Amati that wasn't very new. It played just fine; took me a little while to adjust to only having four vavles, but if you could find one of those I bet it would be well within your price range. If I had that particular one I wouldn't have felt the need to get anything fancier, for the amount of F tuba playing I do (very little at this point.) It had a lighter sound than my 182, and was just as well in tune.

Doc,

Call Dan Oberlow and ask him. I pretty sure he does have one or two under 3k.

Don't know if it's any good, but there's a guy with a new-old-stock Cerveny 4-valve F asking $1875 in the TubaEuph classifieds.

There was one of those on "that auction site" a few months back (thanks to MA for posting the URL for it). If I'm not mistaken, the current version of that horn is the Cerveny CFB 651-4, which is available here ...

... and a case for it ...

New horn + case + shipping might come in under 3K. :)

Pix and specs available at:

Thanks,

Yeah, I've been playing a Meinl Weston 5v F (instead of the Hirs) that I will part with for $2k. I've been told it sounds like a French horn. intonation is pretty good. Notes from F down to C (second line down) are daunting but come together with a little work. No dents to notice. E-mail me at pasang@aol.com
Cheers,
