New Gig: Brass Quintet

Post by iiipopes »

I have been invited to join a brass quintet! The principal trumpet who invited me plays in the regional community orchestra and is quite a player. The other members are well versed musicians also. I have played in brass quintet a few times before over the years, but only as a sub. This is looking to be a long-term deal, with several gigs during the year going forward. I am really looking forward to this as a new challenge different from all the other ensembles I have performed with over the decades. The first rehearsal went well, although my sight reading chops are a little rusty. Well, enough chat - after work, time to practice!

Some of the literature is challenging, but - with today's technology - there are scans, emails, and youtube, so first rehearsals of new tunes can be more productive/fun. :D
Thanks!

Congratulations on the new gig! Quintet playing is fun. Personal relations are as important as musical issues in a chamber group. You don’t have to be great personal friends with everyone in the group (although that is nice, and likely to happen) but you do need to be able to share opinions freely. It can be tricky joining an established group, be conservative at first.

Small brass groups have been the most fun I've ever had, with second place being playing in a horn section. Tuba, horn, and euph in brass quintet, horn trios and quartets. Have a great time!
