Bozza Concertino questions

Would those who have played this work be so kind as to tell at what metronome settings you played each of the three movements? (I do not have access to a reference recording.)



While the score (pno reduction) provides an indication of dotted quarter = 160 for the third movement [Allegro vivo], no metronome indication is given for the first nor second mvts.

(I’m wondering if the tempos of first and third movements get tempered a bit; since – if Allegro vivo is 160 for the 3rd mvt, then the Allegro vivo for the first mvt must be pretty close. These tempi seem “incredibly fastâ€

I would recommend getting a recording of the Sonatine (quintet work). Some of the same performance directions are used, and may give you a better idea of what tempi may be considered acceptable.

Thanks for the suggestion. (I played the Sonatine quite a bit several years back.)

However, I am really looking for the input of folks who have performd this piece in order to get a consensus (or average) of standardly utilized tempi. (In other words, mvt I is mm = XX; mvt II is mm = XX; and so on.)

I think the fastest I've ever heard the first movement was at about 132bpm. and that was flying.

there is a recording of this piece out there. The album is called "the french connection" or something. Can't remember the artist (but he painted his face red white and blue for the album cover, scary stuff)...the link,

Try to dig up the old Philip Jones recording.

Philip Jones recording of the Bozza Concertino for solo tuba? Didn't know it existed with them. Fletcher playing the solo? (With orch or piano accomp?)

The CD with the concertino on it is awesome. Bazsinka is a very scary tuba player (also check out his CD waves). I would definitely recommend getting it. I ordered the CD from Amazon and it took like 3 or 4 months, you might want to try getting it from somewhere else, or maybe you'll have better luck than I did.
Some of the pieces on the rest of the CD are pretty nuts, typical French Conseravtory (real high, real low, real fast, but really nice music) so if you are looking to have a piece to compliment the Bozza, you might want to consider some of these.
Jozsef Bazsinka will also be perorming at the confenece this year in Budapest playing music of Bach. I won't be able to go, but I bet it will be ridiculous.
