Can't speak for others, but as a band director type, I tend to beat the crap out of instruments that I use while I teach. Something about running around like a crazy person trying to teach beginners and MS kids makes me drop stuff all the time or backup and knock over instruments I have on stands. I've talked to others that do the same. I've dropped a lot of clarinet parts and knocked over many trombones on stands.
My horns are OK though. I keep my main horn in its closed case behind my podium. I have Wessex Bombino I bought used that I keep next to my podium with the idea that if a kid steps on the bell I won't be too bummed, and that I brought it on myself. That horn is great to play with the kiddos. Good way to be sure they aren't copying my fingerings.
The scariest incident I ever had was this past fall. After a marching band gig I had a few stragglers waiting for rides, so I started packing up some stuff to take home including my Bb Neo. I set it on the ground by my office to grab my gig bag. I take 5 steps in then back out with my bag and a kid who isn't in the color guard (after auditioning twice....) was standing right next to my horn spinning a flag (which the guard knows not to do in the band room). I have never screamed at another human being with that much hatred and intensity in my entire life.
life's little mysteries...
