The previous discussion of the piccolo tuba was fun. That said, I've been wondering about the alto tuba. Bandestration suggests that the mellophone could be the alto tuba of our day. At Texas Bandmasters Convention this week Ion Balu was showing off his new full length mellophone. So twice the length of a typical mellophone. Thought you might find it interesting.

"Mellophone" overlaps with "alto horn" somewhat. I like to think of the alto horn as a member of the saxhorn family.MusicSmiths wrote:the mellophone could be the alto tuba of our day.

I concur. I have a Russian example of the Eb version, and it is still rather bright in timbre in that the bell throat is tighter.Mark Finley wrote:Here is the closest you're going to get to an alto tuba. It's Made by miraphone, it's in F, and is much more conical than a regular alto horn

My "Kiev" (made in?) Eb is sure not as conical, but at least it's right handed.
