Oskar Maurus F helicon

Post by 2ba4t »

Have an ancient almost perfect F helicon. Very narrow bore. Original mouthpiece - small euphonium size!!

Began restoration - cleaning etc. Poultice of vinegar and salt and flour revealed a beautiful silver shield on the bell - 'Oskar Maurus - Ried Im Innkreis'. Looked him up and believe it or not the music shop still exists in that Austrian town.

This is definitely a 1860 -80 instrument. Boy is it blackened.

Any ideas advice please. It should blow well. Valves all OK and it may deserve a 4th and 5th valve. I'll see.

Love to but am not yet savy enough so to do. I have the pics on a card in my old nokia non-smartphone. Now what??? Same with word doc.fingering chart I wanted to post. tubenet does not accept the files because I have not loaded them properly.

No I will NOT sacrifice my freedom and get a smartphone. Tried 'em. Not impressed. Too big. To many bells and whistles. Unnecessary and you all look so stupid walking around staring at them. At a recent wedding the entire crowd were sitting round their tables staring at their phones. More like a funeral. [Yes, for a watch, I carry around a grandfather clock on my back.]

I didn't get the memo that this was a prerequisite for owning a smartphone - I'd better get with the program, so I can look stupid like everyone else....
Yes, for a watch, I carry around a grandfather clock on my back.
And trying to tune in to "Ozzie and Harriet" on your DuMont TV set (or was that "The Great Gildersleeve" on your Atwater Kent?) :tuba:

If you have a PC of some flavor (windows, mac, chrome, ubuntu, etc.) you should be able to upload those photos using http://www.imgur.com" target="_blank" target="_blank and then get the direct link to the uploaded image (url will end in an extension that mirrors the photo file type, e.g. .png, .jpg). Once you have that link, you can imbed it with the image tags {img} and {/img} where the braces {} are replaced by square brackets [].

Most of this style of webhosting and markup (although the phpbb framework makes some of the tagging easier) has been around since, oh 1994, so you won't be advancing too far forward.

Roweenie, anyone who can produce such sumptuous BBQs or photos thereof must be excluded from 'you all'.
'You all' means y'all and was not specific.
I did specify 'walking around'. If you want to lie on your backs or fly or do handstands whilst so absorbed, that's cool.

RANT WARNING
[However, as doubling down is a new 21st century virtue] -
Just look up for a moment, if you can, and watch y'all wondering around absorbed in whatever on a flat lump of plastic and metal, walking into lampposts, tripping over kerbs. I just made $30m inventing an ap that acts as a walking satnav and obstacle avoidance device so you need never look up, ever. It cannot yet sense pigeons or discarded pizza boxes so is no good in Trafalgar or Times Squares. My next ap will obviate eating, sleeping, talking, seeing humans, moving and ultimately, living. It will be called the solipsism ap. 'cos no one will exist.
I could not buy a small stupidphone because no one makes them to any sensible specs. All the small ones are specialist and too expensive. It's not really way chill, man, unless you have the latest humongous screen. Have you not noticed all shirt top pockets and other pockets are now being made to fit the latest phone. I believe the next generation will need backpacks.
RANT OVER

Matthew
Many thanks. 1994 was yesterday. Remember, I was born before they put the horse and cart together and it still worries me. I shall gather some kids and ask their help in following your kind advice.

Oh ffs. Does everybody here have such a high horse? Go to Facebook if you want to rant about non-tuba related things in a tuba-related forum of the board.
New tubist. Ex-euphoniumistststst...
No, wait. Euphoniumist once again... Damn, it's hard to keep up.

Came to check out a sweet antique helicon. Stayed to leave a comment using my smartphone.
