Steve's Clinic Low Register Slotting and Buzzing

Low Brass friends, here is a little video I did on the characteristics of the slots in the lower register in particular, and how free buzzing is related but different, and if you try what I am demonstrating, I have found that students greatly have improved their focus and agility and tone quality doing this! If it is helpful, please feel free to share. If it already intuitively obvious, then you are already probably playing very efficiently. Every day I try to improve my efficiency with these sort of exercises and it does work well.

Peterbas, If you think the slot is symmetric, try the lower register as I describe and show on the video. If you get different results, then I would like you to show us with your own video, that would be helpful. On Bb2 on trombone, the next partial would be Bb1, so lots of room to bend down before the next partial. The next upper partial would be F3, a 5th higher rather than an octave lower. If you take the impulse response of the trombone, for example, and take the FFT of that impulse period, you will see this, of course. If you have other literature or results, we would like to see. It's more dramatic on some instruments. I have a Rudy Meinl bass trumpet and on Bb2 one can bend downward to F2 but upward practically nothing. It is dependent on where the partials are and the Q factor of the bandpass filter and the symmetry of the effective filtering effect itself.
