TAMA by Kanstul?

Post by jerseyeuph »

Does anyone know if the TAMA by Kanstul brass instruments were built in CA or were they imports? I have a line on a marching trombone/flugabone. I've sent Kanstul an email via the web site, but I'm guessing they are no longer around to answer.

Thanks.

All of the Tama by Kanstul stuff I've seen looks identical to the horns that are simply branded Kanstul, so I would assume they were California made along with the rest of the Kanstul line, just with a different engraving.

It's that word "handcraft"...

They also marketed "TAMA by Kanstul USA" (<-- engraving) horns for a time. I'm not sure if the association continued until Kanstul closed shop.

As far as I can tell...

The TAMA Kanstul:

The Kanstul 955:

they are quite similar, if not the same build. I would like to confirm, if possible.

Thanks.

Yes, I saw TAMA by Kanstul marching instruments being made in Anaheim several years back when I did a tour of their factory. I have a "Besson USA" flugelbone that is also a Kanstul 955 stencil - good instrument!

How do you find the ergonomics? I have a vague recollection that some found the 955 more difficult to hold comfortably than a King flugabone or Olds (and clones) marching trombones. I've had both of those and they worked well for me (of course, I should have kept them...). Just curious.

Thanks for your help!

I don't find it uncomfortable to hold, but I don't play it for long stretches. I keep it by my desk for playing a few notes while using my computer. It is quite a bit heavier than the King 1130 but the balance is OK. I don't find the ring on the 3rd valve slide to be very user-friendly. I think a trigger would have been better.
