More Martin Merch: Bb Baritone and Handcraft Valve Trombone

Post by SousaWarrior9 »

Need to make way for some new projects, so I have two more horns up for your consideration:
Martin BR-30 Bb Baritone, featuring 3 front-action piston valves, and a detachable recording bell, late 50s.
This was Martin's more compact model of baritone horn, with a very tight wrap and a little loop before the main tuning slide to facilitate a smaller wrap.
The good: Despite its minuscule size it produces a surprisingly robust sound with great clarity, almost like that of a British-style baritone. The small size makes it very light and easy to handle. It has the original lacquer, with a few spots that are worn off, bit I'd consider it about 80% there, and it has darkened a bit over time to provide a nice "vintage" look. Pistons and slides have minimal wear and all operate fine without issue.

The bad/the ugly: The first valve finger button doesn't match the other two but is very similar in appearance. The felts underneath the second two finger buttons don't quite fit under the caps as a result. Both bell screws are present and function, but they don't match. Not sure which one is original. No case or mouthpiece.

I'd consider this horn great for a younger student who who does't yet want to wrestle with a full sized euph, or for an adult player who wants something a bit more compact for certain gigs, almost like the "travel euphonium" of sorts.

Our next martin on the market is a stunning silver Martin handcraft valve trombone from the mid-to-late 20s!
The good: This horn is in pretty immaculate condition, especially considering its age. 100% of the original silver plating is in tact and it shines up very nicely. The pistons are also in incredible shape With very minimal wear visible on the valve plating. Valve action is incredibly smooth and quiet, so this horn is incredibly nimble in technical passages once you get used to it. This is a pre-committtee valve trombone, so the main tuning slide is actually located where the handslide would be on a typical trombone, not in the bell, meaning that the bell is perfectly conical in taper, which really mellows out the tone and gives it a very clean, elegant look with no bracing in the back of the bell section. Gig bag included.

The bad/the ugly: There are a few small dings throughout the horn, but nothing major. The bell attaches to the valve section with a old-school ligature screw, and not a modern-type slide lock...nothing bad about this, but just might seem strange for some players. The third valve stem is slightly longer than the first and second for some reason, although the valve does not appear to be out of alignment to me. And finally, the bore is quite small for modern standards, so the feel of the horn takes some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, it's a blast to play.

Everything is closed. Time to pick up a new instrument in all your new-found spare time? A valve trombone or baritone, perhaps?
