Honestly I thought this was a joke thread. It would be like me going to a car forum and asking if anyone had a Ferrari 488 Spider, Lamborghini Huracán, and an Aston Martin Vantage, and would be willing to let me drive them, just in case I might want one later on.

.... If you really want to try a bunch of expensive tubas in Texas, go to TMEA and hang out in the convention hall. Those exhibitors seem to have no problems with high school kids handling their merchandise all week despite most of them not being real money-in-hand customers.

Thanks! I couldn't begin to sift through all the emails to find that info. You already know that if it had been a 164 BBb, I would have made a beeline into Houston.

And if was in CC, then I... Oh wait... I almost got that tuba about 4 times over a few years. After reading Ted's write-ups about it, I'm glad that I didn't buy it, and I'm glad that Ted DID buy it. Seems like a tuba that would have been misunderstood in different hands.

For Brian... No, there aren't many 164's, so don't focus on them at all. The Nirschl is great, but tremendously expensive and a top level tool. Forget finding an Adams either. Maybe a Hirsbrunner HB-50, but even then...

Many people like the Eastman, and there are many people who really like the Wessex 6/4 as well. There is one of those for sale here for under $7k, which seems like a good price.

I don't know what play testing looks like during a pandemic, but people sure seem to be buying and selling tubas. So I dunno. But forget about a 164 CC.

Alexander will probably make a 164 on demand, even today. Bring your checkbook. And be prepared to wait, perhaps a long time, for delivery.

Likewise, Walter Nirschl still seems to be making stuff. As I understand it, about 130 Nirschl Yorks have been made, up until around 2016. They probably outnumber Gronitz PCK's, or Holton CC-345's, for that matter. In fact, they might be surpassed in total western-made York copies made only by Meinl-Weston and Hirsbrunner. I recall being allowed to play an early hand-made Yorkbrunner in 1986 at the TUBA conference that was held in Austin that year. And the guy working the booth even tried to sell it to me.

The Adams was at the Army Workshop in January (in those innocent days when people could actually crowd into a room and, you know, play tubas). I wouldn't have been surprised if it showed up at TMEA a week later.

But I agree that these specialty tubas should not be first in line for young players, or maybe even old players.

His post was not an unreasonable one, and he shouldn’t have gotten this kind of crap for merely seeking information. Also, if you don’t like people playing your personal equipment that’s fine, but it’s no reason to be insistent that people shouldn’t inquire about trying out tubas.

As for comments about buying intent and budget, do you REALLY know what his intent is or how much money he has to spend? If you don’t, then you’re making unwanted/needed assumptions.

Those tubas are all needle-in-a-haystack rare. COVID and budget don’t enter the equation at all if you can’t find the tubas in the first place. If I owned any of them, I’d have the boy come over and honk his guts out, eat supper, and talk shop (Corona be damned!). But I don’t. And, unfortunately, no one else does either. If that’s tantamount to garbage, then let me step down off the truck and dump the can in the back.

Which has apparently not been played very much. Those are by all accounts very good tubas, so I would wonder what issues he found with it. Given the very wide variation in tuba sizes and feel, I can't see how anyone can know if they like or dislike a tuba if it has only been played a little bit.

I wonder what his main tuba is.
