Tuba Christmas Virtual Performance?
Hi all,
Hope you are staying safe and healthy. I’m curious if anyone might be privy to the state of Tuba Christmas events in December. I suppose it may be likely that many or most are cancelled for this year, so I wonder if any one would be interested in participating in a virtual choir with all tuba and euphonium players? I’m thinking of something along the lines of my Nimrod project: https://youtu.be/4rDHG3lKv2Y" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank , but the major difference would be that it would be open to all players regardless of ability, age, etc.
Of course, live events would be the preference for everyone involved, but I’d love to see if there is enough interest in the broader tuba/euph community to submit videos for such a project.
Thanks!

Re: Tuba Christmas Virtual Performance?
Not intended to in any way disparage the idea, but comes irrepressibly to my mind: With all the latency of the typical Zoom meeting (small to large fraction of a second), the resulting timing mismatches should produce a general mud that is quite lifelike to an actual TubaChristmas gathering. If that doesn't work fully, throw a giant reverb on the mix as well.
I like the idea, but the point of TC and similar events, it seems to me, is to get everyone in one place. That said, I hope for great success.

Hi Rick,
Yes, everyone playing in the same place is the ideal and if TC events were presented as usual, this would not be a worthwhile endeavor. Also, it is not intended to be a worldwide zoom meeting. Like my Nimrod project, each person would record their individual part on their own time, submit the recording to me, and I would edit the audio and video together in a mass presentation. Did you see the Nimrod video? The end product would be similar.

If no sanctioned TC this year, I'll get together with a few friends, 6 feet apart, and play some tunes outside. Yes, in Minnesota, in winter.

One could easily argue that any gathering of tuba players could be termed "socially distant", so actually spacing out shouldn't be much problem. In fact, small groups may even be clearer!

LOL, ok well I guess the folks on Tubenet are not into this sort of thing. Posted this on a couple of pages on Facebook and got responses from hundreds of interested people right away. Lesson learned

Re: Tuba Christmas Virtual Performance?
I would definitely be interested sir
I found your 100 tuba piece, it was brilliant!
I'd be very happy to participate in e-concert for tubachristmas thing
I think live would be an interesting attempt... but I suspect sending in recordings would be a better production

With all due respect, it's July, and a holiday weekend. Perhaps it's just not something people are thinking about right now.Scott Sutherland wrote:LOL, ok well I guess the folks on Tubenet are not into this sort of thing. Plus, ease of response on those platforms doesn’t compare to bulletin board software that’s 15 years old where things are a bit clunkier.bort wrote:With all due respect, it's July, and a holiday weekend. And who knows if people saw the post here, flipped to Facebook, and then responded there?
It’s like those old jokes about marketing budgets.

I wasn’t speaking at all about the number of responses, only to the fact that none of the initial replies showed any interest in participating. I have no problem with that, I just found the dichotomy curious.bort wrote:With all due respect, it's July, and a holiday weekend. I’d like to gather up a trombone, two trumpets and a French or tenor horn player out of my community band for a quintet if our regular gig is is not on as well.bort wrote:If no sanctioned TC this year, I'll get together with a few friends, 6 feet apart, and play some tunes outside. I always wanted to get a group to commit random acts of tubachristmas: drive around (in separate cars these days) and stop here or there, get out, play a few tunes and hit the road again.

I will get a list of guidelines together for everyone when the time is right. No software necessary, though if you have the ability to record separate HQ audio, that’s great. Otherwise, I suspect most people will record a simple video on their phone.Doc wrote:Scott,
I'd be game for that for sure. What software, if any, is needed? I have mics, interface, etc.

Re: Tuba Christmas Virtual Performance?
I have no idea if it be better, but i've been using OBS - https://obsproject.com/" target="_blank . This lets you record video and audio in one file. Specifically have connected my H4N to my PC as a mic, and used a webcamera to record video.
Not sure if using Audacity for pure sound then recording video separately is a better quality.. I know what i've recorded so far hasn't sounded so great, but I don't think I can blame OBS for that

Re: Tuba Christmas Virtual Performance?
That's the best way! No need to try anything new, LOL. But, most people do not have the technology or the knowledge to record in this way. Probably 20% of the video submissions received for that Nimrod video were separate HQ audio with a video. Everything else was just a phone or Zoom device recording.Doc wrote:Thanks. What I've done lately is use a good mic/Audacity, then combine it with a video in which I played along with the recording in iMovie. But I'm up for trying new things, too.
