FS: Miraphone Siegfried Lowered Price

Post by TubaMoro »

Hi,

I'm selling my Miraphone Siegfried. This is a great tuba, but it's unfortunately a little to big for my use.

The tuba is in mint condition, and I sell it with an original Miraphone case and a Schlipf practice mute.

The tuba is located in Oslo, Norway.

I would like to get USD10750 for it.

Best regard,
Arne

Joe,
You could see if he's interested in a trade!
Or, maybe a whole bunch of blokepieces and free room and board to your summer Bloke Camp. :)

Lots of friends looking to help you spend your money, Joe. But, for about the price of a 186 plus a vacation to the fjords, I'd think there'd be a line around the block to buy this one!

You have to pay import duty on it. I think it's something like 3%... which is on the $300 range. Not much at all.

Shipping... Well, that's the tricky part. Especially since the tuba is gigantic. Commercial air flight might not be possible with it, and if so, it's risky or expensive. Freight is much safer, but slow and very expensive.

It's not going to be fun to get a 6/4 into the US on your own. I did it once. It wasn't fun. Send me a PM if you want to hear more about that.

This might be one of those rare instances that airline restrictions work in your favor:

-Less luggage on the plane overall from reduced passenger counts should ease restrictions due to capacity

-If the airline is leaving the middle seat open, because in airline math 18” = 72”, you might be able to convince them to let you board with the tuba as a carry-on that will occupy the center seat and provide additional shielding from COVID19.

I’m kinda joking and kinda not. It’s worth asking.

The first thing I'd look at is both - commercial air freight. I don't know anything about it other than someone sent me a helicon that way a long time ago. The seller has to go to the airport, you have to go to the airport and do the customs business, but you don't have to go to Norway if you don't want to, so that may factor into the cost. Which is considerable, but I bet it's roughly on the order of a one way passenger ticket, and your tuba travels quickly and in style. Mine was on a pallet, with a box that had thoughtfully been built with a sloping top to match the dimensions of the contents - but with perhaps the side benefit that it couldn't hold stuff stacked on top. In extreme contrast to international DHL parcel, a harrowing experience you don't need.

Plenty of companies shipping that sort of size things. I've done international shipping on a bunch of tubas, and though it was a hassle, it did work out. Finding a company that does it at a reasonable price might be a different challenge, though. Particularly in Norway, where nothing is reasonably priced. As for going there to pick it up, Norway still has a 14 day quarantene in place for anyone coming from abroad, so you might want to factor that one in too. However: Sweden doesn't. Oslo isn't far from the Swedish border, Malmö isn't a massive drive from Oslo... Just saying.

My PT7 flew in the cargo hold, in a gig bag, from Caracas to Miami. Not recommended, but I think the tuba was due for an overhaul anyway.

Obviously, fewer options for export from Venezuela. All around, not recommended, for the extreme hassle involved. But please know, it was no fault of the seller, he couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. It was just a rough situation.

For this Miraphone, professional shipping would absolutely be worth the cost and hassle.

Joe... Midnight came and went. Now it's morning. What's my price?

Sigh, . . . I wish "Siegried" were available in CC. With M.'s great rotary valves, it could be awesome. I just don't like the short bell on the "Bruckner". I like a more 'stove pipe' bell, where I can send the smoke signals up and out . . . and I don't have to hear myself!

How old is the tuba (or what year was it made)? Was there any modification made to it?
Thanks,
MD
