Hello all and Happy 2024!
I’m looking for feedback from folx who have experience with both the Yamaha YCB621 and the John Packer JP279C copy/stencil of the Yamaha.
I bought a used YCB621 off of Reverb a few years back; it was an old BLAST! (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blast!_(musical)) horn. I have fallen in love with this horn and I use it for 90% of my playing (small jazz groups, street bands (met more than one jealous sousaphone player).
I want to invest in my first new horn ever, and it will be either the Yamaha or the JP. My current horn will continue to be used for marching, outdoor gigs, mosh pits, etc. This horn is for the practice room and studio exclusively.
Any thoughts or feedback on this matter will be greatly appreciated. Basically, if you tell me a $5k JP horn plays as well as the $10k original, I will spend the money to find one and play test it.
All the best to all of y’all for a great 2024.
Comparison: YCB621 v. JP279C. Looking for feedback...

5 valves, and get 16 inch bell
I have a Yamaha 16.5 bell on my 621F. Makes tuba sound way larger than it feels.

Hey Tom,
Thanks for the helpful feedback. It looks like we're sort of neighbors. I live in ATL.

I agree regarding the Mack Brass with the 16" bell. Check out my whacky review above.
