4+2 Contrabass Tuba?

Post by ThomasP »

I just got my ITEA today and on the back cover there is a Custom Music Ad. with Bob Tucci and Dan Perantoni. I'm wondering what the horn that Tucci is hold is? It looks to have a rotary valve both above the first piston valve and below the fourth piston valve. Is this just some pictoral illusion or does it have a 4+2 set-up?

Looks like a PT-7P to me, the B&S version of a 6/4 piston CC.

I've spent a little time playing a few different PT-7s, and they are setup in the typical 4+1 fashion, so I think the picture it just at a strange angle to make it look like there could be a rotor before the piston block, but there isn't.

Compare to: http://custommusiccorp.com/tubas/pt7p.jpg

The other horn is a PT-16, by the way.

Some horns have that rotor that kicks out the main tuning slide, could it possibly be that?

That's odd ... it did for me. (beautiful horn, BTW)

A compensating tuba would weigh much more than just adding another valve. I think it might have something to do with response more than weight or intonation, or perhaps it's just that no one has done it yet? (In CC that is)
