Words of wisdom from Mom & Dad

Post by Joe Baker »

I got to thinking... wouldn't it be great to get a collection of some of the greatest parental proverbs. There's so many of those things I heard Mom or Dad say a zillion times that have proven themselves to be so right!

I'll start it off with a couple from my Dad that pertain to business:
  • 1. The boss isn't always right, but he's always the boss.
    2. Nothing happens until somebody sells something.
and one pertaining to personal finance (wish I'd actually DONE this 20 years earlier):
  • 3. Make a dollar do the work of a dollar and a quarter [by saving and earning interest] rather than letting a dollar and a quarter do the work of a dollar [by buying on credit and paying interest].
What else you guys & dolls got?

Never criticize a man until you've walked a mile in his shoes. Then, if he gets mad, you have a mile head start and you have his shoes.

1. The boss isn't always right, but he's always the boss.
When I was in the pizza business I would tell my employees the same thing but I exchanged "boss" with the word "customer". That way it took the edge off when the employee knew they didn't mess up but had to keep the customer happy anyway.

From my dad:

Always keep your word. A man is only as good as his word.
You must always have a fudge factor.

When was the last time you had a 4 hour game of Pinochle?

Here's one from my wife to my son:
Your sisters will be mad if you leave the toilet seat up when you're through; but not half as mad as they'll be if you leave it DOWN before you start!
From a good friend's mother:
Scratch where it itches, even if it itches in your britches
From my mother:
Never kiss a girl you wouldn't want me [speaking of herself] to meet.
From my GRANDMOTHER:
The bee is such a busy soul,
He has no time for birth control.
And that is why, in times like these,
There are so many sons of b's.

From my DAD:

"Do the next right thing!"

"If you can't figure-out the next right thing....
....then think of the next wrong thing....and don't do it"

This has saved me from problems more times than any other catchy phrase. It's usually easy to think of the next wrong thing..it's not doing it that rules!

Bridge and pinochle both turn into all-evening affairs, I'm afraid. But some folks I know play cribbage at lunch.
