Piston Venting

Post by greatk82 »

My band is looking to have our four Hirsbrunner's valves vented. Does anyone recomend a particular repair shop in the Austin-San Antonio-Dallas Area to have this work done? Thanks all for your input.

Bloke,
Thanks for your reply. I am in the Army Band and trying to convince our supply Sergeant to have this work done. I have been telling him exactly what you just said. Having it written by another person will do alot to help my cause.
Thanks,

They have done great work for the guys in the San Antonio Symphony. Pete cleaned out my horn real well. Pete has been doing this over 40 years. I know and have seen that he does great work.

PM me for their information.
If you have Pete do it, make sure it's really Pete doing the work. I've seen work done by proteges in his shop that is not up to the standard you describe.

I had my Miraphone econo-overhauled in San Antonio at Jubilee Music, but I'm not sure Beto is still doing the work himself.

But venting piston valves is not actually difficult or demanding. It just requires care and a bit of knowledge on how to do it right, which is true for all repairs.

I concur w/Richard's opinion of Dennis Houghton http://www.houghtonhorns.com/. Dennis has probably done something in the neighborhood of $8,000 worth of work on my horns, including rebuilding an old B&S F tuba with better-than-new valves and lots of custom work (see pics on his website). In a word, he-da-man. He will do it right, and he will get it done to your satisfaction.

I actually work with Dennis Houghton out of his shop in Keller, more the Northside of the Ft. Worth area. 817 431 8072

Thank you all for your suggestions. I have been searching for a good repair shop in the area, as I am new to Texas. Thanks for your help.
