This pix was on the CBS Morning News this Sunday. Harry Smith was the one doing the announcing, he's (Smith) a tuba player!

I don't always remember faces well, but that horn looks like the one used in the street band that plays in front of St. Louis Cathedral. The mouthpipe caught my attention the last time I saw them. The group is usually led by a trombonist. Anybody remember the group's name?

Sousaphone Player I.D.
Re: Hurricane Katrina aftermath photo:
The picture of the sousaphone player walking on a highway next to the Superdome shows Mark Smith (middle) of the French Quarter Jackson Square Band.
Kathleen Flynn of the St. Petersburg Times was the photographer.
The photo was distributed via the Associated Press. Smith was quoted in the photo caption:
"If I leave this I might as well jump in the water myself," he said of his tuba. "This is my livelihood."

That's the band and the fellow I was thinking about.
Mark Smith, if this message gets to you there are places in Denton, Texas in which to stay.
And we bought a fixer-upper house that I need help painting, laying kitchen floor, etc. That could generate some cash until a regular gig opens up.
