I have joined our school's jazz ensembel and am attemptng to learn jazz. I was wondering if anyone could reccomend a few good cds to begin with to get used to some of the style....keeping min mind that I am a college student and have limited funds...What would be your top 2 or 3 choices for a beginning exposure to jazz and such?
Thanks
Amy

Miles- Kind of Blue
Louis Armstrong- Hot 5 and Hot 7 recordings
Dave Brubeck- Take 5
Paul Desmond- Live at Oberlin
John Coltrane- Giant Steps
Also, anything by the Basie band, anything by Art Tatum(has to be heard to be believed), Chest Baker, Clifford Brown, J.J. Johnson, Gerry Mulligan, you get the idea.

If I only had one CD to learn what big bands were all about it would be "Basie Live at the Sands".
If I had two, the second would be "Ellington at Newport 1956".
Third would be Thad Jones/Mel Lewis "Consummation".
Fourth would be Buddy Rich's "Keep the Customer Satisfied".
After four CD's I would be broke.
