From the review, it looks like it was a really good showing by Central Florida! Right in there in the results near the likes of Grimethorpe, Desford Colliery... Impressive!

Funny you should mention Grimethorpe! It seems that the audience thought that they deserved a much higher ranking.

But the Childs brothers certainly did put in a great showing!

My favorite Brass Band CD is Grimethorpe's, "Brass from the Masters" vol 2. Just awesome playing.

I saw the test piece when they handed it out at rehearsal just before I left.....wow......what a blow?!! Haven't heard it yet, but from talking with my mates at the band it was a bear!

Grimethorpe was the darling this year at 4barsrest and picked to win it all. And after hearing them at the Yorkshire Regionals, I would have said the same thing! I wouldn't be surprised to see Grimey go a wee bit higher next month in London......

But I will say that the competition this year is VERY good with many of the top bands being in TOP form. Dyke is rolling with their anniversary year and is sounding fantastic. YBS is very strong with some fairly new positions filled. BAYV is always a strong contender. Brighouse is coming together very well with James Gourlay at the helm.

And my old band, Faireys, is on the way back. Don't count them out after having a bit of a down year, they have had some really good signings this year and got some really solid players....many from the RNCM.

As an American in a top British Brass Band, it was an amazing experience to be a part of such an incredible tradition. It could be kinda compared to DCI (only without the glitzy costumes and crappy show on ESPN2), except its a real part of the British culture. We played some nice jobs in big theaters as well as several band clubs (that was surreal...people sitting in a tiny room with a bar at the back listening to a brass band play old tunes and singing along at times), and even acid house music at an art gallery in Vienna?!!?

I'm glad to see that the Brass Band of Central Florida faired so well at the Open...that's a pretty tough contest for even the most seasoned vets. I'm also glad to see the explosion of brass bands around the US and the high level of performance thats coming from them. Bands like the New England Brass Band, the Chicago Brass Band, BB of Central Florida, BB of Battle Creek and even university bands like JMU and Illinois are doing a great job at getting 'banding' out to the mainstream. I hope that I again join my mates at Faireys or even a band here in the States to play again.

Doubtless Frank Renton will have some highlights on LTTB on Radio 2 fairly soon:
