Toscannini was a 'cellist.

Patrick Sheridan is the conductor of the Salt River Brass Band here in Arizona...he's a phenomenal conductor too! Very musical, as you might have guessed.

David Borsvold was my tuba instructor at Kent State University in the mid 90's. He left that post to take the assistant conductor spot with the Fort Wayne Symphony, which he held for several years.

There is a guy that conducts a wind band over in Virginia that is one hell of a tuba player. I have never seen him conduct, just heard the recordings of his group. I heard a recording of it when I was in grad school, but I can't call the guy's name..

Isn't Sande MacMorran the associate conductor for the Knoxville Symphony and conductor of the Knoxville Youth Symphony?

Maestro Loras Schissel, director of "Virginia Grand Military Band".

Virginia Grand Military Band

Mr. Schissel was guest conductor for one of our concerts last year (Symphonic Band of the Palm Beaches). During our one rehearsal with him, he moved the placement of our 2 tuba players to back-center and said his main instrument was tuba. He's coming back later this year as our guest conductor. He's an excellent conductor and can be very demanding.

Mr. Schissel was very instrumental and getting JP Sousa's unfinished march finished. Stephen Bulla finished the "Library of Congress" march in 2003.

Bob Barr, one of the best high school band directors ever, for years band conductor at the Brevard Music Center summer programs, and a tremendous clinic band conductor, was a champion tuba soloist in the '30's.

Donald Stauffer

He was the conductor of the Birmingham Community Concert Band. BUT, before that he was a tuba player with the Navy Band and also was the conductor of the Navy Band for a number of years.

While more of a composer than a noted director, John Harbison also plays tuba.

Joe,
That would be Jamie Hafner, who conducted the Wind Ensemble and played tuba in the Orchestra at Brevard at one time. He was, or is, a fabulous tuba player and a great conductor. I had the privilege of studying him and playing under him in 179 and 1980. Very overlooked as a tuba player and conductor. All around good guy.
