I'm assuming you're asking about Busch Gardens Williamsburg, and not Tampa...

I played euphonium and trombone on over 1800 German shows ("This is Oktoberfest") at BGW's "Das Festhaus" between 1995 and 1997. As far as low brass employment at the park, if things haven't changed too much, there are 4 tuba spots (2 German bands, and 2 sousaphones for the "Boogie Band") and 2 euph positions. Typically BGW entertainment does an audition tour during November / December to fill openings for the upcoming summer. Wages are somewhere around $12-13 an hour, and you'd work 32-42 hours a week. It is a GREAT job to have if you're working up audition rep, as you play a 25 minute show, take a 35 minute break (practice, eat, whatever) and repeat. As far as finding employment for THIS summer, you're probably a little too late, but it wouldn't hurt to inquire...

I was just recently hired by Busch Gardens to work in watercountry USA. everything the above poster said is accurate, except this year theres a new band, hence me getting hired. auditions were back in december. in the future, you may also want to look into disney and hershey park as well, both have tuba positions. good luck!

Hey Matt...

Long time no talk!

Thanks for filling in most of the blanks for me. I'll take it where you left off...

There are now FIVE tuba positions (1 in Italy, 2 in Oktoberfest, 1 in the Boogies (my job this summer), and 1 at Water Country USA, Busch Gardens water park), and still 2 Euphonium positions. The rates of pay are three-tiered: meaning your rate will go up every year you work there until your third year. The starting rate is $12.22/hr, comprising an approximate 40-hour week. You are responsible for your own living situation, but there is a housing coordinator who will provide you the necessary means to achieve adequate summer housing.

It is definitely a great summer job, and sometimes a great seasonal job (I worked for Busch Gardens since 1992, and now only work summers since I started college again at Temple University). Wonderful musicians (Matt Summers being one), great opportunities for social endeavors (translation: plenty of parties), and decent pay to make it all worth while.

As Matt mentioned it is a little late to be considered for anything this season, but Busch Gardens does hold an audition tour annually. I currently play euphonium there and basically everything that was said is pretty much accurate for right now other than the amount of break time. We normally do a 25 minute show and then get about an hour to do nothing. this is different for the fall because this year we had extended breaks (friday and sunday we had a 3 hour break and saturdays, depending on what howl-o-scream show we were in, the break ranged from 4 to 6 hours) its a great place to get your performing chops in order, and you will have plenty of time to practice. There is an audition here in williamsburg dec. 11. do yourself a favor and take the audition. The only advice I have is that if you get hired don't make a joke about someones girlfriend because you might get fired for sexually harassment.

Age restrictions are illegal under US law (except law enforcement, firefighters, pilots & the like, and actors).

That is true, but I was really referring to the reality of the situation.....do the members of these groups tend to be on the younger side of life's continuum? (Just musing as to whether it would be a fun experience for a middle-aged kid!)
