Pepsi doesn't have enough bite for me.

So if I'm interested in a soft drink, it's usually Coca-Cola,
I'm lazy and use the short form.

Where I grew up (DC, FL, NJ) it was always soda. My mother always called it "tonic," which was apparently a Mass. thing. I guess that is part of the "other" category. I can see using "pop," but calling every type of soda pop (the full name) Coke seems strange to me. Coke is a specific type of soda pop. Would you call Pepsi a type of coke?

A couple of other interesting regional usages are:

Sneakers vs. Tennis shoes vs. somthing else

Hoagy vs. Sub vs. Grinder

Interesting topic. Two cents from the dust bowl (West Texas, where I grew up):

If you ask for a coke, be prepared for the inevitable response, "What kind?"
The first time I heard someone ask for a 'soda' or a'pop', I looked at them funny wondering what country they were from (yes, Texas is its own country).

Where I grew up (Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois) the carbonated soft drink was called "pop".

A "soda" was an ice-cream soda.

Coke was Coca-Cola, Pepsi was Pepsi-Cola.

But for a beverage to relax with I prefer bourbon and branchwater.....
No wait, that would be my drink in Texas, here in Colorado it's bourbon and water.

Where I grew up (Indiana) it was pop, and a soda was an ice cream soda. Then I spent about 14 years in NY state, and learnt a whole buncha different stuff, including new "manners." But it all became soda, then.

But there was a new term, seltzer. Out here they ain't heard of selzer, which is carbonated water, of either the natural variety (Saratoga) or the fake variety (labeled "soda" on the local drink machines.)

Now, out west, along with all them other Easterners who moved out here and ruint the whole thang....we still call it soda. No ice cream. And I had to, once again, learn a new set of "manners," dumping all those manners I picked up in NY.

Grew up in Indy. Was there til I went to collidge at IU.

Recently met a guy who still has NY "manners." Didn't like him much....I guess I have adapted, in my 21 yrs out in the SW. I dont' think I've dumped all of it though; sometimes people still huff off down the hall instead of laughing at my verbal jokes.

Huh. Made a CD with some ladies three summers ago...and am playing a solo on all your-in's favorite instrument, the VIOLA, on "Am I Blue." It's really a nice song. No tuba on the CD, just strangs.
