One of the things I advocate for my students is the recording of practice sessions. It seems as though reasonably priced portable recording is becoming more difficult to find, however. Most minidisc recorders are either very expensive and/or not microphone capable; cassette recorders seem to be limited to tinny voice recorders or multi-track units. And nothing seems available with a built in microphone. I know the IPOD has some type of recording capability and must confess I'm ignorant re that technology.
I wish that someone (Korg, or whomever) would make a nice combination metronome-tuner-recorder. The recorder could be digital and have a limited capacity, (say 30 minutes or less) that could be recorded and deleted from session to session. If a built in mike was provided all someone would need is a pair of headphones. The resulting combination shouldn't be too unwieldy to carry around to a practice room, etc.
If there IS something like that out there I'd love to know about it. In the meantime, if anyone has suggestions about simple, inexpensive, portable recorders out there any info would be appreciated.

re: the iPod for recording practicing, I have a friend who has an iPod with the iTalk device, and it produced a HORRIBLE sound for tuba. the mic was overloaded the entire time, even when the auto level function kicked in. so don't buy an iPod and/or an iTalk with the hope of it working for tuba.

Recording practice/performance sessions is the best way to examine your playing.
I've just finished listening to a rehearsal session we had this morning for a solo recital in 2 weeks time and I have bags of stuff I know I can improve on.
