He probably had a
lot of 4th-valve trills that day, too ...

They made sure that the euphonium and sax were seen very clearly...sortof "hey, it's really your only choice if you want to play pro!"

It certainly is if you
ever play a 3+2, otherwise whatever works...

Usually euph players use the index finger for the 4th valve of 3+1 horns. The index finger is much more agile and strong than the middle finger (and is also the most independant, excluding the thumb). Euphers also usually want to save the middle finger for the drive home.
I play euph, but I use a 4 valve in-line Yamaha 321S (although I really wish they were front action) as my right hand pinky is beefed up pretty good from my 4 valve in-line tuba (primary instrument). Plus, I find 3+1 difficult to co-ordinate, my left hand often doesn't know what my right hand is doing...

It depends on IF someone is conducting...
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

Looks like the ephonium player is suffering.... or maybe he's just pissed off. That would explain the middle finger.
