Euphonium College Entrance Music

Have a euphonium student that's applying to colleges to perform in the fall. He's already got some solid pieces (i.e. Carnival of Venice, Sparke Fantasy) and I've started looking for some stuff that might work (Barat Intro and Dance, Brahms Four Serious Songs, Curnow stuff). Anyone have other ideas they could toss in?

I think you have a great list so far. Here are a few pieces that you might add in:

- Five Pieces in Folk Song Style - Robert Schumann/arr. Droste

This is one of the least performed pieces that I know. Published by Ludwig - this piece is very difficult to play well. Good stuff. It made the young artist list for the Falcone this year.

- Concerto for Euphonium - Horovitz

Yeah, we should all play this one. It is our Vaughan Williams, you know...

- Maybe something from the trombone rep. list

Morceau Symphonique, David Concertino, something like that.

You have a really good list. If I the one I he/she is auditioning for I would be impressed by any of your listed pieces though.

I would recommend some slow movements or etudes. A lot of High School players will play something like the Carnival of Venice with all of the flashy finger work, when they really should be shown their musical expression and sensitivity. If your student doesn't already have an etude book, I would recommend getting the Bordogni book and having them prepare some etudes to play.

Agree. What they're looking for is NOT someone who needs no improvement, but someone who has musicality and is teachable!
