Recording of "Ludus"

Post by JHardisk »

Hello:

I have exhausted my search methods to find a recording of this piece (which includes looking in the archives and following those recommendations).

Does anyone out there have a recording of this piece? The olka/pokorny/johnson seems to be the best floating around. However, I don't care if it's your granny/your english cocker spaniel/and cartman playing it.. I'd like to obtain a recording soon.

I have it programmed on a recital in Feb and my two tuba cohorts are wanting to hear it before we rehearse. I myself have performed it more times than I can count, but alas, have no recording.

I will gladly pay shipping for anyone who might be willing to send me a recording. Please send me a PM if you might help me out!

Best,
~John Hardisky

John,

I have the recording of Deanna, Phil and myself playing it at the festival this past fall. I'll make a copy for you.

For the ultimate recording of Ludus, with Gene Pokorny, Chris Olka and Keating Johnson all playing BATs, contact these folks: http://www.hpnwbbb.org/. See if you can get the recording of the 2002 Founder's Recital.

BTW, this recording also has Pokorny playing several other pieces and Chris Olka playing one of the best performances of Plog's Three Miniatures I have ever heard. It also has Loren Marsteller playing euphonium and ophicleide and a really nice performance of Pilatus by Jason Gilliam on euphonium.

If you happen to be coming to the Army-Tuba Conference, please stop by the Cimarron Music Press booth. Ludus has been out of print for a while now, but it will making its return to publication at the conference.

This will be a version that has been completely re-engraved!

Some other pieces appearing in for the first time at the conference from Nelhybel will be:

15 Tuba Etudes
Tuba Duets
Tuba Quartet - 2 movements
Concerto Grosso - tuba and piano

The above were written by Nelhybel throughout his career, but were never published.

What great news! I was informed of this yesterday, by Tim Olt. And it just so happens that I'll be playing at the army band conference! I'll definitely stop by the booth.

A word of caution.. the previously (in posts long ago) reported places to get Ludus online do not have this piece. I have had it backordered on a web dealer, and I know it is now indefinitely backordered. I'm working on geting a refund, now.

Oh, and thanks to Tim for getting me the recording! It's greatly appreciated!
