Concerning consumers´ data collectors:
The other day I received a nice letter by a company politely asking me to take the time and fill out a SIX PAGES multiple choice form (small print).
There were numerous questions concerning my consuming preferences as well as questions probably meant to categorise my social status.
At least they were frank about the fact that they were going to make this data available to companies. Their arguments why I should choose to cooperate with them went like:
a) I was going to take part in a lottery
b) I was going to receive information on special offers by companies that matched my interests (Meaning personalised junk mail in addition to the 1.5 kg of non-specific junkmail I already get every other week).
Much to their surprise and disappointment (I suppose), I chose to file this in "the round one", although I was quite tempted to write an answering letter politely calling them names.
There IS a reason why I hesitate to pay electronically or subscribe anything via internet. I am aware BIG BROTHER already is watching me as is.

Not a cellphone owner, I could see where this would be worrisome for attorneys, cops, corporate execs, private investigators, physicians, psychiatrists etc. who use cells routinely. In several of these occupations, there is a level of privlege attached to communications (e.g., attorney-client, doctor-patient, trade secret act, national security act etc.)
I imagine that this is a hole that's going to get plugged pretty quickly. AFAIK, the TCA of 1986 prohibits listening in but I can imagine cases where the numbers called might be damaging (e.g. an undercover cop or secret witness who routinely calls in to the local FBI office etc.)

Dunno why you're trying to drag politics into this thing--I'm sure that nobody intended this result--and our congresspeople (particularly in light of the Abramoff business) would be among the last who would like their phone records to be made public.
