Other companys are scheduled to be available some within the next .. who knows when .... . Verizon and Cavalier are available in a lot of areas around me and are much cheaper .

DSL starts out low priced for the initial 6 months, then goes up to $5 less than cable. The prices are $34.95 and $39.95. With cable, you are required to also subscribe to at least the basic cable TV; so that puts it at a little over $50. Cox does the cable around here, and Southwestern Bell does the DSL. There is also satellite, but it costs more.

I live in S. Florida. My DSL service is with BellSouth and costs $24.95/month. But it's the "lite" version -- not a full blown DSL. It downloads @ 256K. For $8 more a month they offer the full version... or you can get even faster.

That's why I stick with my $9.95 local dial-up and use a program to diminish the graphics so it'll load quicker. I prefer to spend my money of tools and tubas!

In many areas, verizon is offering a modest-speed DSL service for $15/month. It requires a 1 year agreement.

http://www22.verizon.com/forhomedsl/cha ... sl/?ID=Res

I believe the speed for that plan is 768/128 (down/up)

I spend about $28 for 3mb/768kb. Still way better than it was even a year ago.

cc_tuba_guy wrote:Price, DSL, essentially, costs ROUGHLY about $25. Then plus taxes, fees, blah, blah, blah. With Cox, you can pay about the same price and get a connection that is 2X faster. They have 3 speeds in my area: 4 meg, 2 meg, and 512k.

I'm not trying to sell cable modems here, just passing on information that I've learned.
The big downside with most cable firms is that you're stuck with them as an ISP. I'd sooner shove toothpicks under my toenails than use comcast, for example. And, while some cable companies offer "internet only" without TV service, the cost can be as much as internet-with-TV.

With DSL, you get to name your ISP. Mine is a minimum-cost no-email-no-nothing but an IP address deal. Since I also have a need for a website and domain hosting, I use the website's email services--it's IMAP and SMTP, just like your regular ISP.

cktuba wrote:Pssssssssssst, here's something that the cable companies don't want you to hear about... you can renegotiate your contract. Basically, if you do a little research and find the best prices in your area on DSL and Satellite TV you can call them up and tell them you will be switching, unless they can meet the prices. Usually they will have an "introductory" package that will put cable broadband around $19.95 per month for a year or so, with similar savings on TV packages. After that period expires it's simply... lather, rinse, repeat.
This is true. Works with DSL as well.

Golden/Execulink 3MB DSL (similar to Bell Sympatico, but we are allowed to purchase a modem to avoid paying model rental fees).

Canadian currency...
Purchase a modem for $100 and pay $37.40 per month (incl. tax)

Rent a modem and pay $48.10 per month (incl. tax)

Located in New Hamburg (Southwestern Ontario) about 150 miles northeast of Detroit. Smaller town.

Well, my ISP tells me my connection rate is 3MB... but I understand that isn't always the case (that is the best case scenario). There are other factors - the quality of the phone lines in your area (I live in a smaller town - the same service at my university would be significantly faster, due to better and newer phone lines) as well as the time of day traffic.

My download speed according to that site is 1398 kbps while my upload speed is 603 kbps.

Download Speed: 2722 kbps (340.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 897 kbps (112.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

I doubt that I EVER get that fast downloads, and if someone is downloading something in my house it slows WAY down.

I have cable.

What I am curious about is what kind of TV and DSL combination packages these companies offer. Do the prices you mention include television service?
