Tempur-Pedic vs. Sleep Number Bed

So, it's time for my wife and I to buy a new bed. I'm soliciting opinions from all you expert sleepers out there.

I've never slept on either, but tested them both. I liked the idea of the Tempurpedic but was scared off by it's insulating properties. I don't like a particularly warm bed, especially in summer (no AC). With a conventional mattress (which we bought) any excess heat is reasonably carried away from your body. The Tempurpedic would be good if you like being toasty. I do have a temperpedic pillow which I like very much though.

Years ago we had two beds in two rooms, one conventional, and the other a waterbed. We slept on the waterbed in the winter (heater on) and the summer (heater off) and in the other room on the conventional bed in the Spring and Fall when large temperature swings would cause us to either overheat or be too cold. Worked great!

I tried both of them out (in the stores) last year when shopping for a new mattress. Neither really impressed me, especially considering the extra cost. We ended up buying a Beautyrest and are very happy with it.

I apply the rule that the more advertising dollars that are spent on something, the less likely it is to sell based on quality.

Now, apply that to the drug company ads, and figure out how much of the money you're spending on your prescriptions actually goes to pay for the drugs and not the advertising, and you'll go to bed unhappy tonight.

I've got an old Strearns and Foster that came on the antique claw-foot bed I bought at the used furniture store, with a one-inch foam pad. Really comfortable.

I have had a "sleep number" bed for about 7 years now since when it was called Select Comfort. It was the perfect compromise between my wife's desire for a super soft bed that started causing me back problems and a rock hard bed that was great for my back but not for her comfort. We chose to get the pillow top model, which was a little more comfortable for both and got rid of that airbed feel. As long as we stay on our respective sides (you literally have to draw a line in the middle - his side and her side) the bed works exactly as it is supposed to. I had a "tempurpedic" pillow once, and while it was comfortable it would make your head sweat! My wife made the mistake of folding it in half once, and it just cracked down the middle.

Did you re-read Matthew's thread about this last year?

I'm still using the mattress I bought in October 2003, with latex foam and memory foam. Last I looked Mark some other options now that I'd take advantage of. Still for them monney it been great. I still miss my water bed in the winter though:(

I've not noticed problems with heat in the summer on the memory foam.

Today I'd get something like this or this. I think the prices still include shipping (via FedEx Home Delivery).

Prices have gone up on my mattress. I paid $545, it now sells for $866 (full size) but it's still cheaper than a Tempur-Pedic($1000 + $175 shipping ).

Another vote for a plain old Stearns and Foster. Great mattress set that keeps its shape and feel.

If I am really tired, sometimes I prefer the floor.... like on roadtrips and such... I dont know why really. Perhaps its becuase I sit in a car all day with cushy seats and my body desires some hard reality.

we have a water bed for over 16 years now. I wouldn't trade it for the world. It is one of the more firm "waveless" matresses. can't remember the brand anymore.

I second the vote for Water Bed. My wife and I got the soft side dual bladder bed a couple of years ago and love it. With the softsides it look like a regular bed and the dual bladder lets each of us adjust the firmness and tempature to suit our individual desires.

When I got divorced, my ex-wife gave me a wonderful, flexible, supportive bed that you can watch TV, eat, do income tax, and even sleep in. (It was our bed.) The problem is my fiancee (future wife #2) is handicapped (back and leg paralysis) and I have a prescription for a mattress that her doctor says she has to have. Banner Mattress said they can build it for me. And the price is quite reasonable.
