Yeah, the rescue organization is coming back to get the bunny in an hour or so. He really is sweet....and if I were already retired, I might keep him. But...oh well. At least I know he is going back to someone who didn't really want to give him up in the first place; she only did because he was the only candidate who sounded like he could possibly work out.

I know better to get another cat; been there, done that. But the lonely yowling at night has made it necessary to put her in the far reaches of the house if I want any sleep at all. Allowing her in the bedroom is just as bad, as she walks on me all night and I STILL don't get any sleep.

I found that a rabbit is kind of dumb, needs more care than I want to put in, and my cat is afraid of him. Although she doesn't seem to feel threatened in the heirarchial sense as she would be with another cat.

So...even though he is sweet and has brightened things around here, he'll go back to the rescue organization. Phooey....maybe a hamster in a cage? Don't want another cat....Pepper is 17+ and looks like she will be around for quite a few more years, based on current complete lack of any disease or disorder. But you never know....I suppose she could go tomorrow.

Charlie is in there tearing up paper and digging away at his carboard box....can't let him on the carpet, would need fences all over the house. Apparently rabbits like to chew electrical cords too....so yeah this is a lot more maintenance than a cat. And I don't really want to come home to a fried rabbit.

If a single cat enters a household - unless it is one of those *extraordinarily friendly cats and is introduced to another extraordinarily friendly cat (or dog) - "getting a friend for cat" usually doesn't work out. The BEST strategy that I've found (based on 47 years of cat ownership) is to take TWO female sibling cats from a litter. They will keep each other company in their strange/new home away from mommy, and (even if on-again/off-again) will be "friends for life".
____________________________________________
*Of our five cats, ONE of them is this way...but it takes at least two to tango...and yes, five is a bunch of cats, but we have a large property, and five indoor/outdoor cats are just barely enough to keep the pests and varmints back past the tree line.

Our cat, Roxy (whose medical problems I wrote about in detail a few months ago) is exactly this sort of extraordinarily friendly cat. We decided in November to look into getting a second cat, as a companion for her. She's only a year old, and has a fairly high energy level. We hoped, that by getting a second cat, she would spend more time playing around with her new friend, and less time biting our feet every time we took our shoes off.

We got Sammy about a month ago, and the two seem to getting along fine. They play-fight on occasion (at least, I think it's playing...they're both young, and there's no hissing or growling), but after the first few days of Roxy establishing herself as the dominant cat, we've really had no problems at all, thankfully.

EDIT: Moments after this posting, I looked over and found Roxy, my 1 year old blind cat, sitting on top of my tuba in its gig bag:

I appreciate the offer, guys, especially Elephant. The cat had to be out of the house today, and I am positively not allowed pets where I live now (don't need to get thrown out of another domicile...)
Well, I tried to do the right thing. I went to my old house and looked for a cardboard box but found none, so I just scooped up the cat and got back in my van. I drove about half an hour, cat "screaming" the whole time, to the "Humane Society". Their website said they were open today. When I got there cat in hand, they told me I had to make an appointment to drop off an animal, the soonest being Monday when I had to work. They also told me there was a $15.00 fee. I can't afford that; I couldn't even afford the round trip gas money there once, never mind two round trips. Despite my pleas, they adamantly would not take the animal, but instead stuffed directions to Metro animal control in my hand. During the drive, the cat finally got quiet. I found out why when I arrived. She had wedged herself under the driver's seat, almost jammed in the adjusting mechanism. In the 20 degree weather, I tried my best to extract her, but could not. I finally went into animal control, and they sent someone who was able to coax her out and put her in a carrier. I signed the papers and left. They seemed friendly, and the cat may wind up back at the inHumane Society next week anyway, sans my $15.00.

I spent the next couple hours removing poorly hung window treatments and patching gaping holes, and precisely mounting three sets of "faux wood" two inch blinds. They do look good; she spent enough money on them. Ironically, I get to spend the night in my house because I have to watch the kids while she got called off to cover an overnight shift. And there is food in the fridge. :)

Marty, may I sincerely recommend a book that may help you out in your current situation?
Image
Hopefully, it's available at your local library so you can check it out and read it without having to buy it. Or, just go to your local bookstore, plop down, and spend a few hours reading it there.

This recommendation has nothing to do with "religion" or "faith" (take those to heart or don't, doesn't change my recommendation), but rather the power of positive thinking. As someone who has been through EXACTLY what you're going through now, I can say with conviction that it will help a great deal. Keep your chin up...these bad times will earn you double favor in the days ahead.

Good luck!

You can say that again. But I'd rather use it to do statistical analysis and make topo maps than do it by hand.

Found out today that I'm getting laid off from my job. The whole division is getting cut, my last day is 2/26.

I'm not happy about it, but not too upset either. More disappointed than anything -- I had a good job with a very intelligent and talented group of people.

But when one door closes, another one opens, right?

Oh, guess I should hold off on buying an F tuba now.

Sometimes the sheer obliviousness of people you encounter is just amazing. Although the bulk of my duties involve servers and networking, I am still called upon to perform desktop duties when necessary. I had to move a lady's computer and IP phone to a new cube this afternoon. When I was getting everything plugged in, I explained about how there was a special outlet in the cube with a D on it, and that is a dedicated circuit for only computer equipment. I would be plugging a power strip in there and connecting her computer equipment to it. The other outlets, with a large white A on them, are where you will plug in a heater, fan, or anything else that we don't want to cause interference on the computers. She responded, "OK, you want me to plug the heater into the power strip."
Then, she mentions this application that prompts her for her name and password every time she uses it, and asks me if there is any way to save the password on her computer. I ask her to show me what it is, to see if I can find a way. When she starts the app up, there is a screen with three prompts: Username, Password, and an empty box labeled "check here if you want to save your password." :|

Got the tuba back last week, Chuck did an awesome job. Here's the "after" picture.

Yeah yeah, I know it just looks like a tuba to everyone else out there, but I'm excited to have her all fixed up and ready to go. :) About 40 years old, but only used for 3(?) of those years (so far).

Beats me why anybody would elect to live in a place that has these regular, but terribly unpredicable earth tremblings! As intelligent as he is, one would think the esteemed governor would find a quieter abode. Though the excitement, the danger, can be a powerful emotional stimulant I am told.
