Hey! I like violas and viola players in general. I was merely reporting my surprise in finding that viola jokes had spread to the double bass section. There are certainly enough brass player stereotype jokes out there too, just ask any string player if you have a few minutes to listen. They are generally pretty funny too, particularly the trumpet player jokes.

I COMPLETELY AGREE with your implications/statement that we live in a "representative democracy", and that more central information increases the ability of this sort of regime to "function".

I long for the restoration, however, of a "representative republic".

The two things that have, more than anything else, moved us away from a representative republic and toward a representative democracy are the 14th and 17th amendments - both of which were ratified by a lot more Americans than ratified the original constitution. Another step in that direction, that is being discussed, would be the elimination of the electoral college in favor of direct election.

Not arguing which is better - just saying that the United States of America has deliberately chosen, through the originally established constitutional amendment process, to move in that direction.

Got the letter today that says we will be getting Census forms next week. I'll try to keep my enthusiasm under control. It ended with a website reference in a bunch of different languages. I can read three, recognized others, but the two above the bottom one mystify me. Filipino? Katakana?

Does anyone else think that is ludicrous? My feeble mind starts reeling when I think of the postage cost to send those letters to EVERYONE.

• Chinese (classic, not simplified - but not real sure about that.)

Yeah, it's not like there's anything to it - just send them the forms, let folks fill them out and mail them back. Just because it's worth 4 pages of blabber on a tuba bulletin board doesn't mean that, in the real world, people could be expected to have any interest in the issues around filling out a simple census form, right?

It's been pretty popular for a while. At least these days you don't have to physically travel to the place of your birth like some kind of salmon. Here's another goody from the OLD testament:

Exodus 30:11-16

11 Then the LORD said to Moses, 12 "When you take a census of the Israelites to count them, each one must pay the LORD a ransom for his life at the time he is counted. Then no plague will come on them when you number them. 13 Each one who crosses over to those already counted is to give a half shekel, according to the sanctuary shekel, which weighs twenty gerahs. This half shekel is an offering to the LORD. 14 All who cross over, those twenty years old or more, are to give an offering to the LORD. 15 The rich are not to give more than a half shekel and the poor are not to give less when you make the offering to the LORD to atone for your lives. 16 Receive the atonement money from the Israelites and use it for the service of the Tent of Meeting. Todd did you use LJV's Time Machine to go way way back in Time? I was looking for something more akin to Modern History not Ancient History.
