Usually euph players use the index finger for the 4th valve of 3+1 horns. The index finger is much more agile and strong than the middle finger (and is also the most independant, excluding the thumb). Euphers also usually want to save the middle finger for the drive home.
I play euph, but I use a 4 valve in-line Yamaha 321S (although I really wish they were front action) as my right hand pinky is beefed up pretty good from my 4 valve in-line tuba (primary instrument). Plus, I find 3+1 difficult to co-ordinate, my left hand often doesn't know what my right hand is doing...
