York and Chicago

Post by bisontuba »

Hi-
Bought some old magazines today, and in there were many instrument ads and endorsements--here is a pic of the tuba player with the Chicago Symphony before Arnold Jacobs, George Hamburg, and his 4 valve bell front York tuba, c. 1925, and then a pic of the three Yorks--JW in the middle and his two sons on either side--enjoy!

HI-
Bigger pics now in the original post. Hmmm ...a book on old ads--from what I bought today, I cut out about 125+ brass inst. ads from 1900-28--more for my archives--and maybe a book...

Yep, his name was August Helleberg, the first tubist of the Chicago Symphony.

 Actually, I've seen the other photos from this shoot, and there's a fine looking black lab sitting next to the tuba. (That's what Mr. Hamburg is resting his hand on.) Unfortunately the dog blinked for this pic and you can't quite make her out.

Recording bell used to be for

RECORDING! Of course he had a bell-front tuba. In 1925 you needed one because the recording equipment was so bass-resistant.
