English translation of the Berlioz/Strauss treatise

Post by imperialbari »

The English translation of the Berlioz/Strauss treatise on orchestration came up in a discussion on one of the horn lists.

Maybe you all have it on your shelves, but here is the link I made for .pdf version for free downloading:

http://tinyurl.com/Berlioz-Strauss-Treatise

The index pagination is offset with 6 from the file page numbers. Printed page #257 is page #263 in the file.

The first section on tubas relates to the Wagner tubas.

Enjoy!

Very interesting stuff! Thank you for posting the link.
Berlioz describes a bass slide trombone in Eb, which I have neither seen nor read about before.
Have any of you ever seen one?
I did see a bass trombone in G in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY) some years ago, but it's no longer there.
He also describes the trombone F-attachment as a recent invention of Adolf Sax, and recommends it.
I heard or read somewhere that Berlioz did not play any musical instrument. True?

False. He was a guitarist. He did not play an orchestral instrument.

False. His biographical website http://www.hberlioz.com notes in his biography that he played the flute.
