Since that ensemble seems to push the envelope, I am surprised you did not ask the conductor about playing one of those "expanded" tuba parts that is floating around out there.

(Seeming to remember a picture a couple of years ago of some Bloke in the back row with a Helicon.)

I play in an orchestra that is made up of musicians who fly in from all over the country. The rehearsals are very intense, and (heck, maybe because we don't "live" with each other) everyone gets along famously . (Except for the tuba player) the artistry is extraordinary. The strings are absolutely phenomenal, etc., as is every section.
