I couldn't disagree more. You simply put in the desired time signature of the "free" bar (17/4 or whatever it would be) and then hide it in the measure attributes. You can also easily do the dotted bar lines there. Piece of cake.

Finale 2011? No, thanks. I'll continue to stick with 2002 which quite literally does everything I need. Magnetic layout? No thanks, I'll move them myself.

Yep, I wrote a piece in free bar design. Which you can do the way you suggested, OR you could make the bar 1,000,000/4.

I use 2008 and just got an email about 2011...doesn't look any different than 2010...or 2009....or 2008. So no switch yet. I would CONSIDER switching when they come out with a magnetic layout...BUT knowing how software works, it'll be "glitchy" and probably cause more work than it fixes. It's not really that hard to just move the stuff as you go.

Guess I'm easily irritated - that seams a pain to me... would rather hit the "don't put any bars in" button. Like mid-measure repeats should have a "put double bar here" button

It's really not much of a pain. Even non-barred measures have some sort of semblance of meter, implied somehow. All you need to do is highlight all the measures, go to measure attributes, and select "hide barlines".

One thing Finale (of any release year) DOES have is a nice forum in which to ask for help if you have a problem like described above and need a quick solution. Many folks check there quite often and you can receive reasonably quick help from very knowledgeable users of Finale. Look here.

I have been fumbling around with PrintMusic 2007, and have been satisfied with what it does in the realm that I use it in: Hobbyist tuba player who transcribes BC/TC euph for the TC/BC euph part/player, or taking a hand written part and putting it on a printed piece of paper, or making woodwind quintets out of the brass music that I have and the like.

As I get deeper into doing some arrangements, however, I discover that most of my directors are using Sibelius rather than Finale, and our combined ineptness on the computer prohibits my stuff from being read by them. People that I know and respect have suggested Finale as a superior program, but they are way more involved and invested in this than I. I don't see me doing anything on the even approaching professional level with this, and I am considering moving to Sibelius. When I do, I will add more to this thread, if it is even pertinent at that point.
