Warm Down?

Post by dopey »

I hear alot of discussions about how people warm up whether it be scales, long tones, buzzing, whatever.

But I never hear about how people "warm down" yet I hear it refered to as a important part of ones practice.

So how do you warm down? I'm asking, because I haven't ever had a real warm down procedure, my warmup is pretty consistant usually scales, long tones, intervals, buzzing, etc. but when it comes to warm down, about the only thing thats consistant is that the horn goes back into its case. :D

I can understand the logic behind one, kinda like a runner who must stretch before he runs, then again after he runs to prevent self injury, but do us musicians risk that same possibility(injury)?

I use low-medium range long-tones at about mf. You can also use Clark or Remington excercises with the same low-medium mf range.

If I don't warm down properly and I try to play again in the next 8 hours my chops feel tight.

Used to play with a guy who would take 15-20 minutes to warm down even though we weren't playing anything above 1 F and everything was in the low to middle range in that particular group. Never helped him any, I think he just wanted the attention......

Warm-downs typically seem to be done by trumpet players. Fir them, loosening the muscles is much more important because they use much less muscles than we do. I have found though that if I have been playing solo literature up at the top and above the staff for a while, that 5 minutes of downward chromatic tones into the ultra-pedal range makes it a little bit easier to pick back up the next day. 15-20 minutes would HAVE to be an attention getter. Then again, trumpet players are attention getters, so maybe that's where that stems from.
