Oh....Living happily unknowing while playing piston tubas with Geib

Whether they're called this or that, I seem to favor the sound I get from a
Geib style. I only have piston tubas

For what it's worth, one version of the story says it isn't the valves that matter, so much as the distance to the valves.

After seeing the top picture, "August" is definitely the adjective describing the tuba Mr. Helleberg is playing, as well as being his first name. So, instead of using the acronym BAT for a large tuba, if the mouthpiece is a "Helleberg," then the large tuba should be the "August."

I can't quite tell by the pic, but is that a humongous leadpipe on the top one?

All of this has made me wonder about the now infamous "Hellenberg" mpc. I remember that some folks believe it has helped them achieve a "world-class" sound. If all of that is true, and if a BAT tuba should really be known as "August," then would the Hellenberg be deserving of being called the "May" mpc.? I mean, with a Hellenberg mpc., they MIGHT be able to get that sound.

Me just contrarywise: I play all my tubas with a very originally Helleberg copy (SSH), mostly rotarys.

That tuba August is playing isn't a BAT. I believe (and please correct me if I am wrong), that those rotary Conn tubas were closer to a 4/4 than a 6/4.
Even if it isn't a "BAT" as we consider that term today, contemporary to the picture, that tuba is still, "August."
